Conference FAQs

What topics does the ASC cover?

All the main seminars are genre non-specific, so it doesn’t matter what genre you write, you will definitely benefit from them. The talks and sessions run by our professional Faculty will deal with specific genres. So far, we will definitely cover Pop, R&B/Urban, Rock, Country and Christian as these are the most popular genres. Our decisions on other genres to be covered will be based on the information we receive from your registration forms. If, for example, there are enough Hip Hop or Children’s songwriters attending to warrant a seminar discussion on those genres, we will endeavour to fill that need.

Whilst many of the seminars relate to the actual craft of songwriting, the ASC also includes workshops, seminars and activities focusing on demo and album production, publishing, royalties and contracts, performance and career topics, industry legalities, promotion, and the various markets where songs are used.

Who can attend the ASC?

When ASC was first held in 2008, it attracted performing and non-performing songwriters from across the country. These days, the event also attracts non-writing performing artists, artist and songwriter managers, producers and others who work (or want to work) with songwriters or who want to learn about the craft of songwriting. Anyone interested in the craft and business of songwriting is welcome at ASC.

Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. There will be no fee payable for the accompanying parent/guardian unless that parent/guardian intends to take part in the conference activities. Non-paying parents/guardians will not be permitted to enter the seminars, workshops or other conference sessions, or pitch songs on behalf of the attendee. Non-paying parents/guardians will be permitted into the opening ceremony, closing ceremony and attendee performance nights and jam sessions.

Pending seating availability, family and friends are welcome at our Opening Ceremony and Song Contest Awards night, and the closing speeches, as well as the nightly attendee live performances, however all other conference activities are for paying attendees only.  An exception to this rule will be made for attendees holding a ‘Companion Card’.

Where can I stay while I’m at ASC?

ACCOMMODATION

EBTR - FAQ imageThe ASC Faculty and Staff will be staying at the venue – Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort. Why not stay with us too? You’ll receive a $20 discount – just mention you are attending the Australian Songwriters Conference when you make your reservation. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOK ONLINE AS THE ENTIRE VENUE HAS BEEN PLACED ON HOLD FOR THE ASC. You must book your accommodation at the Resort by phoning Alex directly on 02) 4341 1999, but be quick! There are a very limited number of suites available and they book out quickly, so to avoid disappointment we recommend you make your reservation as soon as your register for the event.  If you can’t get into the Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort, there are other great accommodation options available in Ettalong:

Mantra Resort Ettalong Beach: 13 15 17
Ettalong Beach Holiday Village: 02) 4344 2211
Ettalong Beach Motel: 02) 4344 6611

All these accommodation alternatives are great value and just a few minutes walk to the venue.

Drive by Car

From Sydney head north on the M1 Pacific Motorway. (From Newcastle head south on the M1).

Take the Gosford /Woy Woy Exit, drive through Kariong and turn right after the Shell Service Station (you’ll see the signs for Woy Woy).

Follow this road down the hill (its a long descent and takes about 15 minutes – take care on the hairpin corners)

Keep following the road, over the railway line and straight ahead through the roundabout at the intersection of Ocean Beach Road and Rawson Road (civilisation at last!).

Continue down Rawson Road to the traffic lights at Blackwall Road – turn right.

Follow Blackwall Road down a long straight stretch, follow it around the right-hand hairpin corner (Blackwall Rd becomes Memorial Ave) around the mountain, passing a few commercial and industrial premises and a service station, until you get to another roundabout (we love our roundabouts!) on the T intersection at Maitland Bay Drive.

Turn left onto Maitland Bay Drive and continue about 500 meters then turn right into Picnic Parade (you’ll see the sign for Ettalong).

Follow Picnic Parade down to (another) roundabout and turn left into Ocean View Road – the resort is approx 300 meters up the road on the corner of Ocean View Road and Schnapper Road. The Resort’s undercover car park (for those staying at the resort) is located in Schnapper Road. If you are staying at other accommodation in Ettalong, you can park curbside at the resort or use the main car park located further along Schnapper Road at the rear of the resort and market area.

How do I enter?

You must be registered (with fee paid) to attend the 2018 Australian Songwriters Conference to enter this song contest.

Download and complete the ASC2018 song contest entry form. The instructions and payment details are on the document.

Email your entry form and song entries (MP3s less than 5BM each) to lisa@australiansongwritersconference.com

Entries close at midnight (AEST) 16th April 2018.  Entries received after this date will not be accepted.

How many song entries can I submit?

You can enter up to five (5) times. Songs must be in MP3 format should be no larger than 5MB each.

An entry constitutes one song in one category.

You may enter a Pop song in the Pop category and in the Lyrics Only category = 2 entries.

You may have four songs to enter into the Country category  = 4 entries

Can I enter songs I co-wrote?

You can enter songs co-written with someone else, provided the co-writer is not a professional songwriter/producer, ie; they do not write, co-write or produce songs professionally as their main source of income.

As the ASC attendee, your name should go on the top of the entry form.  There is a space for the song Author/s in each song entry section. If you are entering songs that are co-written, include all the writers of the song in that section. Again, the entry form won’t go to the judges – it’s for ASC record keeping (it’s also a basic courtesy to include the names of all the writers!).

Can I enter songs that are not ‘studio’ production quality?

Yes you can.

The ASC Song Contest is about the quality of the song itself, not the production of the song.  The judges will be listening for exceptional melodies, lyrics, use of rhythms, melodic and lyrical hooks etc.  You can enter a song that is fully produced in a professional studio or a song that is recorded at home with guitar and vocal and it will be judged the same way.

Do I retain my rights to the songs I enter?

Absolutely.

ASC does not have any rights to your songs and we won’t ask you for any either. We usually ask the grand winner permission to add a non-downloadable sound file to the website for a few weeks afterwards, but there is no question of rights.  The winner often gets snapped up by a publisher anyway, and we don’t want to jeopardise that – it would go against the ASC ethos to do so.

How do I submit my songs?

Songs must be submitted as MP3s and should be no larger than 5MB each.

Each MP3 file should be named as the song title.  Please ensure your name is written on the CD or USB stick for identification purposes..

Please place all your songs on one CD or USB stick when sending your entries by post. Only songs being entered in the contest should be included on the CD, USB stick or email.

Post your CD or USB stick, along with your completed entry form to:

ASC2018 Song Contest
PO Box 122
Woy Woy  NSW  2256

If you are emailing your entries, please attach your correctly titled MP3s and your completed entry form and send in one email.  Please ensure the MP3s are correctly titled.  Email your entries and entry form to lisa@australiansongwritersconference.com

If you are entering a song in more than one category, it only needs to uploaded once to the CD, USB stick or email.  We will ensure the song is included in the categories you have nominated on your entry form.

After the closing date, all the songs for each category will be placed online at a secret location where our judges can listen and vote on the contest submissions.  To maintain a fair contest, the writer’s names and contact details will not appear with the songs.
